This year, Croppers celebrates a remarkable milestone: 50 years of serving the Norwich community. Founded in 1974, Croppers has grown from a humble shop – originally located on Lower Goat Lane for 18 months before moving to 5 St Gregory’s Alley – into a beloved local institution, now spanning generations of loyal customers.

The story began when Nick, a barber from Shepherd’s Bush in London, saw an opportunity to bring his skills to Norwich. With his wife by his side as the shop’s Saturday assistant, Nick built Croppers on a foundation of quality, service, and warmth. Over the years, it grew into much more than just a barbershop. “We see ourselves as a family business that welcomes everyone, from all walks of life and all ages,” said Mike and Steve (Nick’s son), who now run the shop together.

Nick retired 20 years ago, passing the reins to Mike and Steve, who have modernised the shop while staying true to its roots. This blend of tradition and adaptability has kept Croppers thriving through changing times.

The recent 50th-anniversary celebration was a testament to the community Croppers has built. “We really didn’t know how many people would come – we wondered if we’d bought too much or too little,” Mike and Steve recalled. But by 4:30 pm, the shop was packed, with over 200 guests – including longtime customers, former staff, and friends – filling the barbershop and spilling out onto the street. The evening was filled with music, thanks to a loyal customer and friend who volunteered to DJ. “He was brilliant, and everyone was dancing, drinking, chatting, and enjoying the atmosphere. It was everything we hoped for and more.”

The night was especially memorable for Nick, who was honoured by friends, family, and both current and former staff who came to celebrate his vision and legacy. “A lot of people turned up just to see him,” Mike shares, highlighting the deep impact Nick has had on the community over the decades.

Reflecting on what’s made Croppers last, Mike and Steve emphasised that it’s all about people. “Your customers are everything. Don’t take them for granted – they’re not just customers; they’re friends.” They add that the secret to Croppers’ success has been its dedicated staff, who share a commitment to making everyone feel welcome. “We always make sure to acknowledge every person who walks in and to say goodbye when they leave. It’s second nature to us, and it makes all the difference.”

With some customers now in their fourth generation of visits, Croppers has truly become part of the fabric of Norwich. Here’s to another 50 years of haircuts, friendships, and community spirit at Croppers.
